Information about Latvian musical instruments:
by type

The instruments are ordered according to the three-group system. In the scolarly literature about the Latvian folk music instruments, the system of Hornbostel-Zaks is generally used, in which instruments are first divided according to the source of the sound (idiophons, membranophons, chordophons and aerophons), and then subdivided according to the way of extraction of the sound, e.g. pulstaile, bow, strummed etc. Despite the advantages of this system for the scholarly works, it does not correspond to intuitive perception of people, e.g. the triangle is self-sounding and timbrel - mebran-sounding, though both are perceived by listeners as pulsatile. Therefore we have chosen the so called three-group system.
